Fentanyl Overdose Becomes The Latest Concern For San Francisco

Fentanyl is a type of opioid that is almost 30 times more dangerous than heroin. The cases of fentanyl overdose have increased in San Francisco and have become one of the biggest concerns for the city. Dr. Daniel Ciccarone revealed that if the cases of seizure due to fentanyl is increasing, then it means that the supply is increasing. However, San Francisco police have been busting fentanyl dealers and suppliers to cut down the supply. This goes on to show that catching hold of suppliers is not enough to deal with this concern.

Tenderloin In San Francisco Is The Center Of All Fentanyl Problems

Tenderloin is the place in San Francisco where most of the drug activity takes place. Last year, 5.5 kg of fentanyl was seized by the police. A police officer said, “For context, the 5.5 kilograms of fentanyl SFPD Tenderloin officers took off the street in 2020 is enough to wipe out the population of San Francisco three times over.” If this concerns you, then the stats of 2021 will blow your mind. In just 4 months, police seized 8 kg of fentanyl from Tenderloin and will probably end the year with 20 kg.

Synthetic Opioid Is The Reason Behind Popularity Of Fentanyl

There is a reason why fentanyl has become the latest thing among drug users. Heroin is a natural opioid as it requires a raw material called Poppy which is cultivated and harvested. However, fentanyl is synthetic and is made in labs. Therefore, the cost gets reduced for fentanyl. The police officer further said, “When we went from natural opiates to synthetic, it changed the game, unfortunately. That’s one reason that the number of overdose deaths has been skyrocketing, not just in the Bay Area but nationally. You get a lot of bang for your buck if you’re a drug dealer because you can buy it cheap and sell it high. A little goes a long way.”
