Maryland Governor Larry Hogan Posthumously Pardons Racial Lynching Victims

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has decided to posthumously decided to pardon 34 victims who died due to racial lynching. The decision was a unique one as it was the first time that people were pardoned posthumously. The incidents against these victims took place between 1854 and 1933. As per Hogan, these people did not get any legal course and were convicted because of their race. Moreover, He said, “My hope is that this action will at least in some way help to right these horrific wrongs and perhaps bring a measure of peace to the memories of these individuals and to their descendants and their loved ones.”

Larry Hogan Hopes To Bring Some Peace Out Of The Racial Lynching Incidents

Larry Hogan is hoping that the action taken by him will help in moving forward the argument against racial discrimination. The incidents of racial lynching dating back to 1850s were brutal against the blacks and other minorities. With his one of its kind decision, Hogan hopes to bring some closure on such horrific incidents. He said, “Today, we are once again leading the way as we continue the work to build a more perfect union. My hope is that this action will at least in some way help to right these horrific wrongs and perhaps bring a measure of peace to the memories of these individuals, and to their descendants and loved ones.”

Larry Hogan Honors 15-Year-Old Howard Cooper As Part Of Maryland Lynching Memorial Project

Larry Hogan pardoned the 34 victims at an event honoring 15-year-old Howard Cooper. In 1885, a Cooper was dragged out of the jail and hanged by a group of white men. He was convicted of rape by an all-white bench. The white judges convicted him within minutes and he was denied justice.
